Following Mr. Giancarlo Dall'Ara who developed the hospitality model called "Albergo Diffuso - AD" (litterally translated in 'scattered hotel'), not all of the tourism firms that call themselves "Albergo Diffuso" are really such thing. Very similarly, not all of the authentic alberghi diffusi are working sufficiently well as to become "even" tourism development models within the rural community in which they operate. Following the Resource-Based Theory, which is an emerging theoretic and managerial mainstream (Penrose, 1959; Wernerfelt, 1984; Barney, 1991, 2001; Peteraf, 1993), the Albergo Diffuso can be seen as a productive resource which is necessary but not sufficient for the purpose to achieve a 'sustained tourism development'. The same definition of 'sustained tourism development' and 'development model' are often ambiguous and require to be clarified. Without clarifying these and other key-distinguishing conceptual tools it is very difficult to develop an existing Albergo Diffuso from "resource" into a "source" of sustained tourism development.   As it is acknowledged by the management of ADs, there are several obstacles that an Albergo Diffuso encounters in its attempt to co-create value within the local community in which it operates. More specifically, there are different "widespread misconceptions" regarding the way in which public-private partnership can be planned and managed in order to create profits for both the Albergo Diffuso and the local community.   These 'widespread misunderstanding', if not clarified, can damage both managers of firms for the widespread hospitality industry and the communities in which they are operating.   Today's presentation will discuss differences existing between the Traditional Albergo Diffuso and the "Virtuous" Albergo Diffuso, in theory and practice.  It was a good opportunity to clarify this misunderstanding" about the Albergo Diffuso.
